Canadian Mountaineers Summit 20,304-Foot Island Peak Using Breakthrough Solid-State Oxygen Supplement, Redefining Human Performance at Altitude

KATHMANDU, NEPAL - October 30, 2025. Canadian mountaineers Tom Comeau and Harry Jugpall  have successfully completed a high-altitude expedition from Everest Base Camp to the summit of Island Peak (20,304 ft), supported by Oxygen For Sport — the world’s only solid-state bioavailable oxygen (O₂) oral supplement.

Their journey, guided by AGA Adventures, the world-class mountaineering company led by record-breaking alpinists Adriana Brownlee and Gelje Sherpa, marks the highest documented use of solid-state bioavailable oxygen supplementation in mountaineering history. In other words, the first time climbers have used powdered oxygen capsules at elevations this high.  

Comeau and Jugpall  trekked through Lukla, Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Deboche,Dingboche, and Lobuche, reaching Everest Base Camp before pushing on to Island Peak, a technical Himalayan summit known for steep ice, exposed ridgelines, and oxygen-starved air.

Elite Training at Altitude Athletic Training — Toronto’s Hypoxic Performance Lab

Preparation for the climb included months of structured hypoxic training at Altitude Athletic Training in Toronto, one of the only consumer-accessible simulated altitude training facilities in the world. Tom Comeau trained at simulated elevations up to 21,000 feet, while systematically testing Oxygen For Sport with pulse oximeter tracking.

During these sessions, Comeau observed oxygen saturation levels dramatically higher when supplementing with the O2 capsules versus control conditions, supporting Oxygen For Sport’s role in elevating physiological oxygen availability, ATP output, and recovery under extreme oxygen stress.

Throughout the expedition, both climbers recorded significantly elevated pulse-ox readings, faster recovery, and no altitude-related fatigue, headaches, or muscle soreness, uncommon for Himalayan expeditions.

“Just like during the high elevation simulations at Altitude Athletic Training, I felt strong during the entire expedition to the summit of Island Peak.  Fresh legs and no headaches or fatigue”, added Comeau. 

On the trail, they assisted other climbers struggling with altitude sickness by providing Oxygen For Sport capsules. Within 20 to 30 minutes, all climbers reported dramatic relief.

“We felt strong every day,” said Harry Jugpall. “Our legs recovered overnight, our energy stayed high, and our oxygen numbers were consistently better than anyone expected. At 16,942 feet, my pulse oximeter read 95. That is a normal reading at sea level.”
